Derek
Powell
was born in
Indianapolis in 1975. A series of great art teachers at Lincoln
Middle School and Pike High School supported an early interest in
painting and especially drawing. A key turning point was the early
show "Derek Powell: Artist" put on by Mrs. Loudermilk
at Lincoln Middle School. Tickled pink by all the attention to his
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and Wolverine drawings, Derek has never
looked back. Went on to study at Taylor with a BS in Art Education.
At Taylor, Derek was known for cranking loud "artsy" music,
walking around like he owned the place, and generally making a huge
mess, in addition to forgetting to make clay for the ceramics department.
After Taylor he worked in Benin, West Africa, for a stint as a graphic
designer with SIM, putting together materials for education regarding
the prevention of AIDS and Malaria. Experimented with ink painting
in his spare time in Africa, creating a series of Last Supper ink
paintings. Work background in language training (French and English)
as well as marketing. A growing interest in business and marketing
led him to pursue an MBA with a minor in Guinness consumption at
Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. Derek's work is often figurative,
influenced by the Abstract Expressionists, and known to change.
Current interest in landscapes.
